Front of house

What is Front of house?

Front of house is the customer-facing part of the restaurant, like hosts, cashiers, and servers.

Front of house means the people and spaces guests see and hear first: the host stand, cash register, dining room, pickup shelf, and the staff answering the phone. These team members are often handling walk-ins, takeout pickups, and questions at the same time.

For example, a server might be seating a table while the phone rings and a pickup customer is standing at the counter. That is a common moment when the front of house gets stretched thin. A phone host can take routine calls so the front team can stay focused on guests in the room.

This matters for phone orders because the front of house is usually the first place customers feel delay. Clear phone handling helps keep the dining room moving and the pickup flow steady.
