Covers

What is Covers?

Covers is the number of people eating in the restaurant, usually used for dine-in rather than takeout.

Covers means the number of guests served. In a dining room, one table of four is four covers. It is a common restaurant word, but it does not always matter for a phone pickup order unless you are also taking a reservation or counting a group.

For example, if someone calls to book a birthday dinner for 10, that is 10 covers. If the same caller later orders takeout for six people, you may think about portions instead of covers.

Why it matters for phone orders: covers help with reservations, dining room planning, and staffing. They are useful when a call turns from “Do you have a table?” into “Can we also add appetizers?” For restaurants that handle both bookings and food calls, the phone host should recognize the difference and route each request correctly.
