Call abandonment
What is Call abandonment?
Call abandonment happens when a caller gives up before the restaurant answers.
Call abandonment is when someone hangs up before they place the order or speak to staff. In a restaurant, that usually happens after too many rings, a long hold, or a confusing phone menu.
Example: a caller wants a large pepperoni pizza, but after waiting 45 seconds they hang up and call the place next door instead. The order never reaches the kitchen.
Why it matters for phone orders: abandoned calls are not just a phone problem. They can become empty tickets and lost repeat business. Busy nights, holiday rushes, and short-staffed shifts make this more likely. Reducing hold time, forwarding unanswered calls, or using a phone host can help keep callers from giving up before the restaurant gets the chance to help them.
